What's Inside a Smart Capacitor Module

A smart capacitor module is a self-contained reactive power compensation unit for 0.4kV low-voltage grids that combines an intelligent measurement-and-control unit, a zero-crossing switching unit, a protection unit, and one or two low-voltage power capacitors (in star or delta configuration) inside a single housing.

Because the measurement, switching, and protection functions are built into the unit itself, each module can sense the local power factor and engage or disengage its own capacitor step through zero-crossing solid-state switching, without waiting on instructions relayed through a separate central controller and a bank of mechanical contactors.

YIDEK's smart capacitor modules, including the YD-8C and YD-868R(S/F)E series, are designed for 380V±20% input at 50Hz±2.5Hz per GB/T 15576, and are rated for a working temperature of -25°C to +55°C, relative humidity up to 50% at +40°C (with higher humidity tolerated at lower temperatures), and altitude up to 2000m.

How This Differs from a Traditional Capacitor Bank

In a traditional capacitor bank, individual capacitors are grouped in steps and switched by external contactors under the direction of a separate reactive power controller that reads a single current-transformer signal for the whole panel.

A smart capacitor module collapses that architecture: the switching device and much of the protection logic move inside each capacitor unit, and each module reports its own status over the network rather than being switched blind by a central relay.

This has direct practical effects: switching is zero-crossing rather than mechanical, which reduces switching transients and contactor wear, and protection functions such as over-voltage, under-voltage, over-temperature, over-current, short-circuit, and harmonic-overload protection are evaluated locally at each module rather than only at the panel level.

The trade-off is that smart modules typically carry a higher per-unit cost than a bare capacitor plus shared contactor, which is weighed against the reduced panel wiring, faster commissioning, and per-step diagnostics they provide. For facilities facing harmonic distortion issues, pairing smart capacitor modules with active harmonic filters or SVG units can provide comprehensive power quality protection.

Smart capacitor modules communicate over RS485 using plug-in data cables between adjacent units, and they auto-network on power-up: one unit is automatically or manually designated as the host, and the host's CAP parameter reports the total number of networked units so an installer can confirm the network is complete.

The YD-868R(S/F)E series supports up to 63 units on a single network, spanning three-phase common compensation modules rated up to 50kvar at 450V, split-phase modules up to 30kvar at 250V, and dual split-phase configurations.

This means a panel can be built up module by module as compensation needs grow, rather than being fixed at commissioning, and each module can be swapped or added without redesigning the whole switching scheme.

Because each module reports individually, a technician can diagnose a single underperforming step from the network status rather than opening the full panel to test capacitors one at a time.
